Explaining Public Relations to the Public

campaigns blog

SPARK Industries came across a 2013 Business Insider article discussing a LinkedIn survey and its findings related to the most misunderstood jobs.

From the article:

“In a recent global survey of 16,000 adults, LinkedIn found that one out of every three parents has a hard time understanding what their child does for a living. Two thirds of parents want to learn more, and half think that they could support their child better if they did.”

The survey found 10 jobs that professionals couldn’t quite explain to their friends and family. The article listed Public Relations Manager at number eight and Social Media Manager at number four. Both job titles could fit a description of a PR Professional. It’s often difficult to give a short, sweet explanation because jobs and tasks in Public Relations are so diverse.

Our agency thinks the same can be said for friends and family of PR students. What do we study and work toward as undergraduate? What professional tasks will our job entail? The answer is not simple and rarely the same for each student.

So, what does a Public Relations Professional actually do? Ivan Vukovic wrote, “there is no one answer.” In a PR Daily article, PR is (still) a difficult job to explain, Vukovic discusses handling inquiries about the profession. We loved the article and hope it helps you explain your own work as a Public Relations Professional.
